Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Cancer

Every time this Full Moon arrives in Cancer, I instantly think of my Dad. He was born with this configuration. It took me many years to understand his translation, because he was so awkward and uncomfortable with his sensitivity.

You would think—a Full Moon in Cancer, a water sign of the highest order—would describe an extremely emotional person. You would assume he had a high value for family and home. He did—and he didn’t.

Because he was an Aquarius rising, which describes the higher self. (If you have studied in our school, or if you have read my new book I Don’t Believe in Astrology, you would know that I believe the rising sign is the soul.) This can create a radical conflict between the ego—the Sun sign—and the rising sign. This was so true of my Dad.

This is hard to say: my Dad had a terrible personality. He had very little interest in his ego. He was not friendly or social, as you might expect with that big Moon in Cancer who supposedly cares so much. Quite the contrary—his personality was altered by circumstance and became stilted.

Raised during the Depression in the 1930s, he suffered financially. His father never learned English and could only sell fruit from a stand. He had been trained to be a rabbi, but arriving from Russia as an adult, he simply could not speak English. He spoke Yiddish and Russian.

My Dad and his siblings lived a desperate life. There is a story of his mother finding him, at age seven, selling newspapers in the freezing Detroit winter—seven years old, in 1930.

His childhood never allowed him the luxury of being soft or compassionate, as you would expect from a Full Moon in Cancer. He was hardened by survival. By seventeen, he found himself in jail for a crime that wasn’t actually his fault. He was stopped by police for speeding, with an unregistered gun in the trunk that was not his, and was sent to prison.

Capricorns often get caught in the smallest of crimes. This is why they are known to toe the line and follow the rules—most of the time. Like policemen who protect us from criminals, Capricorns think fast, with an advanced awareness that can figure out the crook’s thought process. Carl Jung once said the criminal and the policeman are not very far apart in character.

Jung’s analytical psychology focuses on the shadow—the unconscious, repressed, or denied parts of the personality.

When a Capricorn represses their emotional body, anything is possible. And because my Dad had Aquarius rising, his soul simply could not follow rules. He was a renegade, insisting on doing everything his own way. He spoke quickly, told the same silly jokes over and over, loved getting a deal, and walked through the world like he owned the place.

What showed up in his later years—through a medical crisis—was that Full Moon in Cancer waiting in the wings for release. He fell sick and was hospitalized. It took time to determine he had a rare case of herpes on the brain. The symptoms were similar to a rapid onset of dementia. Within days, he no longer knew what day it was, what year it was, or how much one plus one equaled.

My Dad had been a mathematical wizard (Aquarius rising), tested and identified as gifted. He skipped twelfth grade because of his intelligence. He never had the chance to pursue his education, because at such a young age he was sent to jail. Now, as an older man, he had no ability to feel—and his brain was broken.

Within days, they identified the swelling, but it took weeks for him to recover. I was with him when his brain came back online. In the interim, his emotional body came flooding out, like a circuit had broken. He was out of control.

He cried buckets—looking at me, staring, crying, saying, “I love you, I love you,” over and over again. This was a man who never shared emotion, who never even hugged me until my thirties, when I finally said, “Dad, what is it with you? Hug me.”

During this experience, he cried and cried and cried. I sat with him the whole time in the hospital. And truth be told, I saw that Full Moon in Cancer finally express itself.

When the episode was over, I felt his heart as never before. He could only remember small snapshots of what had happened. I asked him, “Dad, do you remember?” He was either too proud to acknowledge it, or his memory failed him. He simply said, “I remember crying, being confused, and you being there with me the whole time. That I remember.”

During this Full Moon, imagine what it would be like if the waterfall of feelings finally began to flow—feelings that had never been felt. Imagine what your male relatives might release if the floodgates opened and rendered them free to be raw.

Who would you say, repeatedly, “I love you, I love you,” to?

Maybe use this emotional moon to stop time and be real, raw, and honest with those you love. Isn’t that what the holidays ought to be—a time of emotional rawness?

I love that you are here reading this. I truly love that these newsletters go out and attempt to open your heart. This is my life’s work: to teach you how to love who you are, to be real, raw, and open.

Am I helping you? Am I real? I’m so curious.

That episode with my Dad opened my heart forever. I have never forgotten that precious time holding his heart.

Now, when I look at older men, I wonder—what are they not expressing? I wonder that all the time.

And what am I not expressing?

What about you—what are you holding back?

    TOTALLY LOVELY DEBRA!!
    THANK YOU!

  • Sonya says:

No one writes like you, Debra. You are real, raw, and unfiltered, and I’ll say what I said before: I have been very picky about who I will listen to on podcasts and whose writing I will read. When it comes to your work, I never want to miss one of your posts, and I’m always drawn to your podcasts. Your wisdom and warmth — combined with your youthful, inspirational, and playful energy — is artistry in motion. It’s a tonic for a toxic, fearful, repressed, conditioned world. And all of us can see that it is through pain — the same pain you share here — that we reach this state. It’s hard-fought-for, just like this Capricorn/Cancer energy expresses. Thank you for sharing your heart and your knowledge of the stars. It is changing our hearts forever.

Thank you for sharing your experience with your Dad. I’m the opposite- Sun in Cancer and Moon in Capricorn with Taurus Rising. I think I may be much like him.
I hurt easily, but hide my pain. I’ll remember it forever. I’m excellent at finding best priced deals, and feel proud of myself when I look around at the beautiful antiques surrounding me. I’m gifted as an Artist, Writer and, ReikiMaster, all in a lonely vacuum. I offer Reiki Healing when someone is wounded (body or soul), but it’s rejected. Hurts! My heart is gentle, I love my kids: but nothing back! So painful. They don’t know how badly it hurts me. I’m not confrontational. I’m 80 years old, been well to do and poor as a beggar. I’ve had a few excellent friendships and then zero!
Love you Debra. Happy New Year, hon!

Oh Debra, I can’t tell you how I cried just reading this. I lost my dad in 2020–and the seed of the equivalent benefit is that I got to share some amazingly tender and beautiful moments with him. Then I lost my mom this past Feb.–three days before my birthday. There are so many things I still want to say to them, to ask them about. I’m so sorry your dad had such a terrible disease but it sounds as though it did allow his heart to burst open. I was born on a full moon in Leo and my sun is Aquarius with Pisces rising. When I was younger (in my 30’s, 40’s) I felt that my struggle was between my Leo moon–which I saw as my ego–and my Aquarius sun, which I thought was my soul. I had read the rising was the personality but that ever felt right for me. So you’ve given me another way of looking at things and as a lifelong astrology lover, I will delve into that. Blessings to you Debra for sharing this beautiful story today. It opened my heart in a big way!

I have a similar chart Cap sun Scorpio moon Aquarius rising. I felt like you were describing parts of my life. Good math skills. Questionable childhood, detained not imprisoned. Definitely a renegade walking my own path like I own the space. I’ve had waterfalls of release in the last few years. Similarly I’ve recently had struggles with my brain and vision. I truly feel my heart opened and how wonderful it is to experience life in this respect. It is an understanding that through the struggle my perseverance has created an honoring of big love for myself and everyone I touch. As you describe your feeling you had when your dad told you he loved you and released the feelings. I have felt the raw, real, and openness you describe in my relationships. Aaaaah love sweet love!

Love to all reading this and your team DSA all the best in 2026 and beyond!
    Love Fred
    YES you are helping!

Dear Debra. I am sorry about your father. A very sad life. If we only knew people’s stories the world would be a different place.
I watch you on YouTube and you are a joy. I’m 78 and lost my husband a year ago after 54 years. He also had a hard childhood and it affected his life. I laugh and cry when I listen to you. You are like the friend I always wanted. Thank you . Sharron

  • Judi says:

Beautiful poignant and redeeming story. It’s true of older men although it seems many do become more emotional as they age. The one thing they may not realize is that when they do open up, become emotional or vulnerable, it brings the outside people closer to them. Thanks for sharing this story.

  • Mary Lu Kelley says:

Beautiful story, beautiful woman! I never had an experience like that with my Dad. I moved away and didn’t stay connected if he softened and opened while he was dying from cancer. Yet I know, I can feel that he did after reading your story and heard from my mom that he softened and her last words to him were “I love you..” Thank you, Debra. Love and peace in 2026.

I too have been learning to see my father in law from a different perspective and it makes me love him more and more. Understanding heals.

Love this! I am going to try to release lots of stuffed emotions next full moon. My cannabis gummy will help. It gets my ego away, monkey mind out of the way, and allows me to focus inward.

  • Madison says:

I really took this in/ the Capricorn : Cancer combo is a hard one. My husband has the opposite of your father. Born July 14 1965 he has a Capricorn moon and his emotional self (I can tell you) is built on his defenses. I imagine now – strangely that a crises broke your father’s patterns- what would open up in my husband psyche, given the chance. And how he’d be freed.

Thank yoi so much for your story

  • Laurie A. says:

Debra this touched me so deeply, thank you so much for sharing the story of your father! My dad went through dementia the last 2 yrs. of his life, and I spent much of this time with him starting in 2016 (this was my second Saturn return) & he would tell us over & over “I love you” although his super functional cognitive brain was gone – but as he first started slipping he’d trained me to take over everything on the physical plane, the house, bills, taxes etc. so that he and my mother could live and die at home in their 90s. I have a Capricorn Sun and Aquarius Rising too, but my emotions were completely cut off until age 21 as my mother was very emotionally unsafe. An astrologer changed my life in my early 20s so I ended up in Boulder at age 25 for a 200-hr. Hakomi training intensive that experientially & powerfully opened every emotional door. What a journey for us Capricorns (and I have a Virgo moon) to discover and deeply experience our emotions! (And dad was a Turkish Jew but my mother’s parents were Jews from Ukraine & Lithuania who came over on the boat in the early 1900s.) ❤️

Thank you so much, Debra, for posting this. I, too, have Aquarius Rising with Sun in Libra and Moon in Gemini. What’s interesting is, in 1993, at the age of 30, during my Saturn Return, I almost died from that brain herpes virus (Encephalitis). I realized after that experience, I needed to wake up and start being true to myself and not give all of my power away. That experience was a big wake-up call and turning point in my life.

  • Lene Santora says:

So interesting with your dad, I am a pisces with moon in cancer and aqarious rising, now a young 82 woman who never felt love as a child but have grown into a whole being, able to finally dare to express deep love ❤️

What a beautiful and interesting combination of planets you have.
Childhood indeed makes so much impact and sometimes when we pass certain experience only then we realize how deeply wounded we were.

Have a happy and wonderful 2026 and may it be the best one so far 😊

I feel my father’s wound as well. Abused in a large Irish fan as normality, beaten by nuns, and uncles during forced drunken hair cuts. He just stopped caring. He is emotionally shut down, and does not care how his actions affect me. I have had to mother him most of my life divorce at 5. Currently I’m trying to figure out how my mother let me visit with him alone. Always fun, I am remembering many times I was not safe in his care. He is an Aquarius 2/18/45. At this age I’ve become curious what my life would have been like if this was not the burden or the gift question that was put on me 😭

  • Nancy Zwerin says:

Thank you 🙏❤️ we humans are so complex aren’t we ? I’m Sorry that your Dad wasn’t able to be there for you emotionally.
I’ve been suppressing my feelings and needs in a relationship with an Aquarius sun sign / Cancer rising /Capricorn moon man. He’s so closed off emotionally and I have been making a lot of concessions to his lack of communication and consistency which is very hard on me as I’m Scorpio sun, Sagittarius rising and Taurus moon . It’s time to talk with him . I need to communicate my needs even though I’m
Pretty sure he’s unable to meet them. It will be a sad but timely goodbye for me .

  • Susie says:

I fell in love with a man, a good man, who internalized his emotions because of childhood trauma. It’s been 4 years and yesterday he asked me to marry him. We’re not spring chickens and this will be my second, and his third marriage. It’s as though a dam broke. And all I did was show him every day what love really means … I’ve spent my life learning to heal myself and now we are both going to truly enjoy life’s gifts together for as long as we have.

  • Maya says:

Another deep and beautiful story – thank you Debra ❤️
And I loved to read all of your comments as well – it’s impressive how much we can learn from each other just by honest sharing.
My moon in Cancer always makes sure I feel a lot (sometimes would be so much easier to be able to choose what, when and how much) and my Virgo sun then jumps in to sort it all out. With Libra rising it all makes it easier as a grow older and understand it all together. But growing up with parents that were two extremes it was very difficult to understand yourself, them, the world we live in.
And that Moon in Cancer was always such a huge push to reach to those one can just feel they need love and support and someone to be there with them and for them. It must have been devastating for your dad to have his Moon in Cancer so silenced and him crying a river makes a perfect sense.

  • amy shumway says:

Thank You so much Debra for sharing all of this! I really needed to hear it – I have Capricorn Moon and Cancer Rising – what a combo! I have been crying buckets the last couple of days , at 57 yrs old finally getting the inner child release therapy I need from growing up with a sick mother – she had headaches for years and then finally discovered a brain tumor the size of small grapefruit that required permanent removal of a portion of her skull ( about a 3″ circle piece) She died 5 yrs after that surgery , she was 40 yrs old, I was 14 yrs old. So this Full Moon coming up in Cancer is making me FINALLY cry buckets!

  • Rita says:

Debra, your memory of your Dad is heart wrenching! For 19 years (my episodes seem to follow the NN), I was married to a guy, Capricorn Sun (9, Jan.1942 Ottawa. Can), Libra moon, and his Venus square Saturn and Uranus in 1st, sitting on my Rising sign at 20 Aquarius, while he has Mars on his Asc. Life was so difficult. His Mercury challenges were the hardest part as he kept all inside, deeply buried! At my Uranus opposition, age 42, I walked out and started life afresh! Like your Dad, his upbringing was emotionally challenging. I was not able to relate to him and feel he saw his father in me, a man he was ar war with! They could not be even civil to each other! Your Dad unblocked the dam and a tsunami ensued! Were my ex to let down his guard, the same thing might happen, after 82 years of holding back his feelings which he equated with a figment of neptunian illusions! Relationships are so difficult to understand! We are all different! Some have been dealt a more challenging deck of cards than others. Since the day I left with 2 small kids, he has negated my existence, sticking to his guns in not wanting to see my face, hear my voice or have me set foot in the house we built together over a periid of 9 years! This is a Karmic debt that I had to pay!

  • Dorothy Loose says:

Very moving account of your father. Love this.

  • Lori says:

This is a wonderful story Debra, how piecing it all together with real life combined with the Astrology of it. Thank you. I’m so glad you’re father got to have that experience. It seems like it was a Karmic neccesity for his soul to release and be free. Interesting to know where the North Node was.

  • Carrie says:

I understand this very well. I’m a Capricorn with a cancer moon, born on the winter solstice no less. I’m a Scorpio rising too…lots of intense energy and feeling under the stoic I’m strong surface. Having tragic circumstances and loss early in life has taught me to survive and make the most with what I’ve got, use everything to learn and thrive. I’m very devoted to my family and sacrifice for them without question. It’s hard for me to express how I feel but thankfully my partner has helped me tremendously with this, I found him later in life and having made so many mistakes before was beneficial for my growth. I understand and appreciate the road in life (even if it’s painful and full of obstacles) it’s necessary to know how to get through life …the destination is the same for all of us. So live your journey the best way you can, forgive yourself for being human and flawed, learn and love as much as possible. And hold your heart, nurture it, don’t let the fear of failure, pain and loss hold you back…life is too short and time is the only thing of value.

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful experience with your dad. I worry about my dad. Would love to see him reflecting inward so he could start to heal some wounds before he leaves this earthly plane. Born 10/24/39 (Houston TX 3:55pm) he carries a lot of ancestral energy that lives in fear, anger and emotional repression (his pisces energies and emotions have been stunted). My life’s mission (Gemini Sun Sag Rising Aquarius Moon) has been to live a life where love is unconditional without judgment. The more I heal my wounds, the more I can help release the wounds of my ancestors. What a gift to be alive during this time to witness the collective consciousness expanding…what an immense privilege to commune with our ancestors for the greatest good of humanity! Thank you. So very grateful.

I’m learning about myself and to love myself; your work, school, and teachers are helping me immensely.
    Thank you.
    With Love, Amy

Gosh Debra, this brought me to tears reading the emotional release finally experienced of your father. What a beautiful story of release and surrender. Yes our men hold so much in, in fear of looking weak or unworthy. I wish society would loosen its grips on whats expected of us all emotionally, so we can truly be our true emotional selves. Such passion and heart!

  • Deborah says:

Oh my god I just look at my information and it’s so confusing. My personality is so confusing……..and now I’m 69 and I still can’t get it together. I’m still self medicating my emotions trying to let my brain not make up a story for every emotion that I have because I don’t know that it’s even the real truth……..my goodness don’t I need some real help.
