2022 starts with a double Capricorn sky. A total of five planets in Capricorn — all hanging out together, dressed up in professional gear. Dressed for success, they just talk about work.

One of them glances over to look at your new year’s resolution sheet and see how you are doing. They want to review it. ‘Did you pick a word for the year to live by?’ They ask while looking away with disdain when you didn’t do your assignment.

Capricorn specializes in high expectations and consistent ‘work’. The word Work, for some is a demanding word, for others it’s sexy—it can immediately carry pressure, time lines and expectations. Or ego building and fame.

Perhaps there is a voice, (mom or dad, a teacher) who judged you for being motivated leaving you fearful of ‘laziness’, or not being ‘successful’ enough? Or you were celebrated for your accomplishments, increasing your work ethic until it eventually hurts you.

Which is it? The upside of Cap, a success story. Or the down side of the underpaid and overworked?

I have a very strong Saturn/ Capricorn influence in my chart. When my first Saturn return arrived, all at once I understood — I was a severe workaholic. I grew up with my Dad’s example that I work hard. He infiltrated my psyche. By 30 I was truly burnt out. An Astrologer who did 8 sessions a day!

You may be someone who is just the opposite– you lack ambition, or cannot sustain it over time. Perhaps you had it once and now it’s gone. Or perhaps you work so hard– you’re just not doing what you love.

We hear stories like Martha Stewart and her Kmart empire. She was known to wake up every day at five, demanding her team do the same to match her work ethic — all hands on deck. Sadly, her ambition was the ruin of her. Eventually she was accused of letting money step over her values and integrity. Like so many Capricorns she got caught red handed and had to do time.

Or the stories of Steve Jobs, his personal reputation was awful. He left his heart behind as he climbed the mountain of success. Think Machiavelli who said “the ends justify the means.” Those who will not stop and have no feelings.

These two examples of famous people who reached the top of their game without pacing. Without their observer on, without awareness. The old school male patriarch who cares only about results and cannot spell or translate the soul’s call.

When I burned out, I asked myself these hard questions: What was demanding me to pour my life force into ‘others as a healer’? Was I compulsive? Could I change that story?

I had too, I was secretly badly depressed and sad. Eventually the crisis was the very motivation to help me change. I shifted. I made some promises to myself.

1 – listen to my body and my rhythms first.
2 – do what I was good at, without carrying the load for everyone and everything.
3 – ask for help.

I studied books on success to find the common traits of a balanced success stories. They are:

1 – Having a spiritual practice.
Not a day goes by that I do not: pray, meditate, walk or swim or bike,

2 – Valuing health above all else, prioritizing self care.
Yes I drink a green drink ( or two everyday), no coffee or acid to start in order to maintain an alkaline ph balance.

3 – Authentic connection. Everyday I make a point to connect with my partners/ friends/ colleagues in a meaningful way. I learned during Covid how much I source from deep connection, it keeps me soft and real.

4 – Seeking fun. I laugh. I put on music. I gave myself permission to value my fire.

Well, I made up my own formula. What’s even more important is I stick to it.

This Capricorn sky challenges us to ask: how do we motivate ourselves to sustain a strong spiritual practice after writing it down. Find others to do this with. Find friends/teachers who live by this and follow them.

What about you? Who inspired you? Can I help you with this cosmic sky to motivate you to really care about you, your health, and your natural rhythms?

Here we are in the New Year — did you make resolutions? What are your goals in the name of double Capricorn, and how are you planning on sticking to them?

The only true motivating force that has sustained my commitment to health some 30 years –after I burnt out: is my commitment to you. I do what I do in the name of evolution and kindness for humanity.

The word I picked this year: calm and steady, better known as patience. I picked patience.

Be patient with yourself and don’t forget to ask for help.

We have Astrological coaches on our team to help: Kris Rowse, Kiki, Sarah L’Hrar, Kristen Masi, Sarah Gordon… Some are trained specifically in business and coaching and would love to help.

That’s the essence of the wisdom of Capricorn that rules the knees: just ask for help. It works every time, I promise.

Blessings,
Debra

  • I believe I’m the opposite, not quite lazy but definitely not obsessed with hard work. I admit I forgot to pick a word but I’ve focused on my health this week and started meditating every morning. So my word is “health”. X

  • Had my chart drawn up many years ago, I was told I have no planets in any Earth signs at all. With your Astrological immersion free course Im beginning to understand my chart, I see I have my true node in Gemini on the cusp with Taurus so that must have some influence.

Hopefully next year I can do Module 1 in Your course, not possible this year. I greatly appreciate your posts and talks on various topics in Astrology and feel I have finally found a source I can understand.

    Many thanks Debra

My word for 2022 is self love

  • Holly says:

Unfortunately, the downside resonates as I am a relaxation queen and the most chill person you ever met. I need to learn to set goals as I am going on 52 yrs of age this March and I realize that I never learned to set goals. Its a tragedy I think. So I set some daily routine goals to start the first of the year…then delayed til today which is Monday the 3rd, and here it is 5:52pm and I still havent completed one goal on my daily routine list. I am ashamed and feel bad. I am embarrassed. I know I need help and I ask for very gentle guidance and help from my angels and spirit team. I want to get my act together and I realize I have a behavioral problem that has been there my entire life. I need to do something different and I feel out of control. It’s hard to be nice to oneself when you are constantly unable to be disciplined.

    • Christopher N/A Crespo says:

To acheive something greater than yourself sometimes requires something known as “Controlled Negative” energy. Discipline has no Emotional Representation (whether good or bad) for such things are things spoken off and communicated and given off to the Universe as usual and common. The implementation of Dark Energy (Your Actions) is what is able to create Light Energy (Results, A Solution, A Completed Algorthm). Light Energy given off first only results in vain reasoning and Reason Alone cannot convience Dark Energy to become Light Energy. Remember the Earth essentially came from a Dark Void but also without the Light Energy (Awakened Energy) Earth would not have its Shape, Texture, Color, Ambience, Its Science and the Scientific Laws that accompany it. All I am saying that BOTH Light Energy (Reasoning Skills) and Dark Energy (Action/Execution/Willpower) are both required to Manifest an Idea or a Vision into Reality. Like the Temple Of Jersualem wasn’t built in one day. The most important Principals Of Success are four of the most difficult to retain (1. Consistency, 2. Correction, 3. Dedication, and 4. Faith (and I mean Faith!!!))

    • dlm says:

I can very much relate to what you were saying. I am noticing for the first time that I have never set true goals but I have set intentions And then I leave it to the winds. I am 58. I am not sure that I want to set goals because I feel like it is a set up to put myself down. I need to rethink How goals can work for me and not to use them against me. My word for this year is calm. It is hard to remain calm when I am berating myself for nor being fast enough, good enough etc. so I will remind myself to embrace Calm. I will allow it to slow my energy system and to have patience with myself. Others seem to have plenty of patience and appreciate my work ethic. why can’t I? CALM

Dear Holly, I was filled with compassion for such a lovely soul who is beating herself up so badly! When I read “some” daily routines, I wondered if you set too many and, consequently, are feeling overwhelmed and asking the question: “Just where to I start?” or “Which one shall I do first?” May I make a suggestion? Holly, would you be kind to yourself and set just ONE daily routine? When you feel really secure that you’re doing your one goal and your one routine has become automatic, then it may well be time to add another………
You mention being 52 – as far as I’m concerned, – at almost 75 – that’s YOUNG! I think it’s great you’ve asked for help from your Angels and Spirit Team and wonder if you would like a bit of help from a compassionate, caring, supportive, non-judgemental person (me!) here on the material plane?
If you’re interested in Debra’s Astrology, I wonder if you are missing Earth or, perhaps, don’t have too much in the way of Fire or Cardinal planets? I’ve now completed Levels 1, 2 and 3 and found one of the most valuable things was to have a Buddy. If you would like a voluneer to be your Buddy (me again!) please email me at BranwenEdwards@aol.com – I’d love to be in touch!

I am a Pisces Sun, Gemini rising, Gemini moon, Capricorn in my 8th house. I am a small business owner and burned out…I do have a deep spiritual relationship with God and the Universe, but not with people. No life anymore…just work. My standards are so high, it gets tiring… My word for 2022 is fortitude…emotional, spiritual and physical…Thank you for all that you are and all that you do Debra.

  • Lisa says:

Hi Debra, wow, my moon is in Capricorn, I love to work, move, always have to be doing something. Yes I wear myself out, most times I listen to myself and rest. I get really grumpy if I am not productive. I work in the service industry(Hairstylist), we certainly felt the effects of shut downs. I totally cheated and worked. First of all, likeI said I love my job, secondly it kept my sanity, third financially I need to work.
During the last two years I absolutely learnt patience, tolerance, and kept my calm. Never knew I had it in me. I will definitely carry that on.
Walking appreciating every inch of nature totally helped, which I will continue. I have always enjoyed the out doors.
Thank you for being you, you are very inspirational. Lisa

  • What a POWERFUL post that left me with a big realization. I am a Sag sun/Cap moon. Much like you, I worked myself to burnout these past few years leading by my dad’s example of working hard to be successful. However, I kept accepting jobs that were paying me NOTHING as I ‘started my business’ on the side…only I wasn’t doing anything with my business until these last 6 months because I was overworked & underpaid at my part time gigs. My intention and word for this year is to receive. To step into my divine feminine. To lean into my Sag sun and have MORE FUN. Thank you for sharing.

  • DEBORAH says:

Hello, Debra; what you state resonates with me; I’ve been looking for my own mantra for the new year and I think that it has to be: Self care. Care for the Self; all aspects; which includes the concepts of Balance, Mindfulness, Letting Go/Letting God, Trusting in my body’s ability to heal; Courage (the kind which involves Self care, it takes courage to put yourself first when others are so in need and you are looked to for guidance/strength). This is where I’m at. My moon is in Capricorn and I have a Venus/Mars conjunction, and I’m a musician and therapist, so this is HUGE for me. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share with you; please do not publish my response. Thank you, Deb

  • Anthony Jones says:

I appreciate you for sharing this with us. It resonated and was heart felt.
I’m a Capricorn (01/16) who is at beautiful crossroads at life with a lot life major decisions and moves to make. My intention is to remain soft while showing up for myself and not settling for less. My prayer is “Universe help me, so that I can help my self, so that I can help somebody else”. Its more clear to me than ever; that I must be of service to humanity and this planet. Patience was one of my biggest lessons and teachers last year. I realize that softness and patience goes hand in hand. Love you Debra! Pray for me as I pray for you. ☀️??

  • JoAnn says:

Thank you for your insight.my new years . Words are do the best I can and stop beating. My self up for what I can’t do. I will have patience with others and myself. Capi sun and moon. Thanks for everything you do. I’m a big fan.

  • Dorothy Harris says:

    Hi Debra,
What a powerful reading. I’m a Sag with moon in Scorpio.
Seems a bit schizophrenic when I write it down. I was overworked, feeling that if I didn’t work hard enough that I wasn’t “enough”. I burnt out, badly. I loved my patients, but my health suffered as did my relationships. My goals for 2022 are pacing myself and self-love. Thank you for listening Debra, dorothy in New Zealand

  • Narda Ferris-Meeks says:

I am a Leo Sun, Sag Moon with a Capricorn ascendant. I am a woman who does too much. This year will be about the letter “P.” Patience, planning and prioritize. This year I will close the chapter on one journey and begin another. My next journey has been a long time in the making and has patiently waited for me to overcome “fear.” My dad was a Capricorn. He was a “do too much” Capricorn. It is his voice in my head that I hear when I tell myself I’m not enough. Thank you, Debra, for being a connected soul for me to learn from!

  • Mandy says:

My word for this year is “heal.” Definitely identifying with this burn out and pushed too far. Time to get priorities back in line like these.

  • Mary Webb says:

Also to understanding their Saturn Life lesson and gifts ?

  • Lea says:

    My word is Fierce!

  • Anne says:

Last year was a year of introspection for me due to the passing of my spouse. I missed a few important events during 2021 because I could not bring myself to commit. This year i am committing to doing what I need to for myself. To take care of my self, to give me a fresh start, to see the people I love, to try new things that are creative and that I have an interest in. I have Sun in Aries / Moon in Leo/ Libra rising. Commitment , (with a side of Patience) !

  • Reign says:

My mom drove me to be the best at everything, to the point that if I can’t master something, I can’t find the patience to do it (I’m working on it). She portrayed an image of a hardworking, ever sacrificing mother as she dropped all the weight of it on my shoulders: raising and educating myself (I was homeschooled) as well as my younger brother, niece, and nephew, cooking and cleaning, all while being told how lazy I was and how much I was breaking her heart. I was simultaneously the golden child and her greatest disappointment as she praised me one moment and chastised me the next.
I was burned out before I started college, and I went through it anyway, driving myself deeper into depression and debt as I wasted away trying to take care of her and our family and make her proud. I’ve lived my life for her and her expectations, only recently realizing how much she was driving and draining me because, when I was in the middle of a breakdown and ended up hospitalizing myself, she showed me her true colors and walked away because I wasn’t giving her what she wanted anymore.
My word for the year is “prosperity.” This may seem an ambitious word meant to keep driving my self-destructive patterns and expectations, but it isn’t. I’m opening myself to the prosperity the universe is offering me and has been offering me. I’m focusing on myself and my needs, and in so doing I’m going to find the balance that I’ve been living without for so long. By caring for myself, everything I need to do will be easier. By learning how to give and receive in kind, I will prosper.

  • Christine says:

My word for this year is TRUTH; in my work, my spiritual practice, my all over self-care. Cap sun/Aquarius asc/Scorp moon-focusing on listening to my own wisdom instead of what everyone else says. It’s taken a long time on this earth, but finally ‘get it’. Thanks for sharing your knowledge + perspectives, Debra! You help make astrology make sense.

  • Isabelle says:

My sun and moon are conjunct in Leo / 10th house and I’m feeling the buzz of this NY energy! My word of the year is organization. Take everything from the past two years and turn it into an incredible source of co-created fulfillment and equal energy exchange. On New Year’s Day the word “exposure” also stood out in my meditation, so I adopted both! My calendar is set with my new habit to instil as well as the tasks to ensure I accomplish this month to meet my future reality! Enjoyed this email and being able to look at your own formula 🙂 Thank you for your wisdom and insight!

  • No planets in Capricorn or an 10th house. Aries moon pushes me hard on work ethic.
    2022 . . . Breathe . . . Ahhhhh ❤️?
Thank you Debra for all you do

  • NInette says:

Hi Debra. I am Sagg/Capricorn cusp 29degrees 50 Sagg . I have been very busy and worked hard in my life but find it easy to chill now I am older. I’d like to harness some of that early fire!. Those critics used to call me lazy as I appear very laid back and slow moving but if they really looked hard I got things done and was a high achiever! I’ve been called lazy by the Narcs wanting to control me. My word for this year will be Create as there is so much I still want to achieve. I need to learn to stop doing so much for others so I can concentrate on my passions!

    • Mary says:

Just want to say hi ?? Ninette,
      I’m on the Cusp 0 sag/ cap.

  • Stephanie Martinez says:

    My word is Joy
I use to be highly motivated, worked hard, long hours, many days in a row and loved it. Somewhere along the line that changed. I find it hard to stick to goals for prayer, meditation, exercise and healthy meals.

  • Joni says:

Im a capricorn moon in the 4th house, my sun is virgo in the 12th. Sigh, I’m always on the go and that go is work lol. My word for 2022 is RELAX!!!

  • Rebecca Moberly says:

I’ve thought about my word, and then thought about about it seven more times said Aquarius stellium, rediscovery. It’s imperative that I rediscover joy, rediscover passions, rediscover me. Right now I think I’m on the high road Cap. But it’s also urging me to slow down, replenish.

  • Tara Gibbons says:

Whew! That was a great post. From the first time I saw one of your funny “sign” videos close to a decade ago, I think you are perfect. Smart, funny, relatable, warm and just fun to be around. I’ve taken Level 1 and 2 and I WORK in research a LOOOOOOT. I like what I do and I love my team, however just like in your post, my Dad’s work ethic inspired/inspires me. My Dad has been gone for several years, but his influence remains strong. My Mom is a Capricorn, right on the cusp. She does have fortitude and focus, but only on projects she wants to work on (she has a lot of fire in her chart)…I feel like this sunset chapter of her life is actually supposed to teach me to be more like her (and be more picky about the projects/people I give myself away to). Like you Debra, and some of the other posters on this thread, I can give myself away. I end up “DOING” me instead of just being me. I start each day and end each night with a prayer, and waking up earlier to read, journal and do yoga. For the one poster that I believe is a Pisces and felt down on herself for not doing anything, I might suggest starting and even staying with small goals. If that person is a Pisces/creative, they could be a nurturer or creative and be a person that thinks outside of the box. Journaling and meditating can be a great “to do” for healing and getting centered. For most folks, just listing 1-3 things to do a day that need to be done or you want to get done helps keep the expectations reasonable. Anyway, Where I live is bitter cold today! So I’ll stick with prayer, yoga and a green drink until I can go outside and be in touch with the earth again. I am a Libra Sun, Taurus Moon and Cancer rising. I feel like this year my word is “wisdom”…use more common sense. Stop and THINK about any situation and be a little more logical instead of so detached or emotional. Lean into my earthy Taurus moon and don’t let the craziness of the world mess around with common sense. Work hard, but also indulge in simple pleasures once in a while (but not all the time), get in “touch” with my soul through prayer and meditation; and get in touch with friends and family that raise a positive vibe. Lord knows we need to keep each other positive and warm these days! Great post as usual. I think I got a three for one today! I checked email AND I just did a little journaling AND I talked to a friend. Thanks Debra 🙂 -Tara

I have Saturn in Capricorn in my fifth house at 29 degrees. I’ve always wanted art to be my career. This house represents the father and lessons.
Dad did his best to make sure I didn’t follow the art path..long story. Anyway, one of my Saturn Returns ..I had art published
and later on my art was on the cover of three magazines. Covid came and I’ve struggled trying to be my creative self. I’m rarely alone.
For me, creativity is a solo gig-a quiet time to reflect on memories and express emotions. I’m in the burnout stage. I also write and have Mercury in Gemini at 0 degrees in the ninth house
my sun is there also. I have had my writing published and then stolen. I feel stuck. We are downsizing to sell our home so, my art space had to return to a bedroom. My spouse says he is supportive but, he isn’t. He has unplugged my computer and done all kinds of things to detour me like my father. Spouse has Saturn in 21 degrees Pisces-in the first house which is interesting it’s about boundaries and thinking they have all the answers. My word is change. I value your insight Deb~ Thank you.

I don’t really know how yet to interpret my chart. Sun in Cancer, Moon in Leo and Libra rising. Sun in Cancer opposite Saturn in Capricorn. All I can say of struggled all my life, tears, fears, and struggles. Trauma throughout my life and at 61 it continues. I’m hard on myself because I’m too sensitive, haven’t created good boundaries and I often withhold my feelings and thoughts mostly for fear of argument. Simply put a knot in my throat. As a child I read under the bed with a flashlight. My two sisters and I slept together on a queen size bed. I would beg them to walk with me to the bathroom because I was afraid of rats, mice, cockroaches. when they refused I wet the bed. If I sat at the table between my parents, I knew I was in trouble and a slap would follow. My parents have passed and I chose to try to make peace with them before they were gone. When the family decided to return to Portugal when I was 13, I had a strong premonition that things would not be good, and they weren’t; more trauma. My grandfather convinced my mother to let me go back to Canada. I returned at 15, Struggled but went back to school and worked and managed to rent an appartment only to feel fear and stressed. My first relationship at 17 with a 22 year old musician. every other ( long term relationship cheated on me, used me, and took away a little more of my spirit. The last was the worse who cheated, lied, emotional and physical abuse and I was the one who lost custody of my 2 little Capricorn sons. It’s been tough. So much to learn. ((sound like a Debbie Downer and don’t mean to)

My word is self care. I’ve let a lot of myself go last year by not caring for myself and caring for others needs before my own. This year I need to have the courage to stand up for what I want and do what I need to do to het out of this funk I’m in. Your words mean a lot to me and really has me thinking about my resolutions and how I need to keep my word. Keeping my word is important to me as well. So I’m going to get up and do what I need to do to be successful.

I don’t have a husband or children so currently Grandma’s Farm will be going to my imaginary Earth Sign Personal Assistant who organizes me, keeps me on task and healthy so that I can throw the big tricks that everyone else is afraid to even contemplate, much less throw and then end that said trick with a whoop and a flourish and a dazzling smile that says, “Bet you weren’t expecting that, huh?!!!”

I also feel Ive been in the same career for so long.. 35 years, it is close to the time to move on. It pays my bills and I am passionate about parts of it.. other times I would rather be in nature, in the garden, or something less structured.
    Its a fine line.
My word for 2022: TRUST as in trust the process, trust myself, trust the universe.

  • Deb says:

I can relate completely to what you say about your Dad and to being a workaholic. My father was incredibly successful but very hard working. I felt I could never live up to expectations and in our house laziness and selfishness were sins. So you had to work hard and you had to drop anything to help people who needed it, whenever, wherever, however. I rebelled and never really fulfilled my potential at school. Stopped and started various courses and jobs because I was trying to avoid entering the same profession as my father, which I eventually did. I had to work harder, be better etc than colleagues because everyone thought I had not won my position on my own merits but through nepotism. That was not true, quite the reverse, but it did nothing to enhance my already low self esteem or confidence. I burned out, started again, burned out, started again and on and on. I was a workaholic for almost all my working life and I have been used and abused by many people over the years both in work and in relationships. I think that it was drilled into me at a young age that if you weren’t sacrificing yourself for others, putting everyone else’s needs first, you were not being a ‘good girl’. I am now finally going to retire and I am facing life alone after more than two decades of marriage. It is frightening, because my mobility is not great and I am suffering from depression, but also liberating because now I will only have to take responsibility for myself and won’t have to tiptoe around someone else to avoid them being unkind to me. So my word for the year is recovery..

My parents have taught me great work ethics but not good health habits. My father died at 45 yrs having smoked 2 packs of smokes a day and drinking every night. Not a drunk but he drank and his heart gave out one night when my mother told him she wanted a divorce. Saturn is in Capricorn in my chart in the 6th house of health and service. My mother preached don’t smoke but she smoked. Lung cancer took her at 75 yrs. I quite smoking when I found out I was pregnant with my first child (23 yrs old) but I smoked more and more pot as the years went by and this year was asked to try quiting just for the month I was doing your course and I did and then another month Level 2, but then I couldn’t afford the third course and the summer came and getting together with family and friends was easy to pick up the habit again. This year I have committed to quiting. My word for this year is FOCUS! I need to focus on what needs to get done in my life as far as getting organised and getting rid of stuff that no longer serves my highest self. I have too many interests and need to narrow it down so I focus my energy on the ones that matter the most. Astrology has given me the tool I needed to see the big picture. Thank you again for being the Light for so many of us Debra.

    Hi Deb!
Workaholic here ??‍♂️ My word for the year is Steadfast. I know Rome was not built in a day but my Capricorn nature will not let me quit. I have learned to pace myself with my goals using the 1% rule. Just 1% closer to my goals every day will get me where I am trying to go over time. Like the Tortoise ? slow and steady wind the race, so steadfast is my word for the year.

As a Capricorn Sun raised by a Capricorn Sun burnout was a big theme of my (recent) Saturn return. Workaholic doesn’t begin to cover what has been ingrained in me, my mother didn’t even really stop in the thick of chemo, My theme for 2022 is “authentic”, I want to focus on the things I can say yes to wholeheartedly and doing them in a way that works for me and not just to tick the boxes I was told I had to tick. Your Astrological Awakening immersion last month was a great starting point for this journey I’m on now, thank you <3

Without all the explaining, reasons excuses etc. Your topic described extremes. UN the extremes we find burnout, obsession avoidance greed lack of fulfillment euphoria and depression.

    My word and theme is…allow.

Hello Debra, I so enjoyed the ten mornings I spent with you with so many others. The most important thing I to understanding is how much I judge myself about things that are only human. The lightness with which you overcame the hiccups that occurred has given me permission to lighten up myself and not worry so much what anyone else maybe thinking or judging. Thank you for that. My New Years Resolution is definitely to relax and have more joy. Thank you!!

I can relate to the Capricorn energy. I have my north node in Capricorn, my Saturn in Aquarius is conjunct my Ascendant. Also, in vedic astrology, I have Capricorn Ascendant. Plus, my biggest music inspiration was John Denver who was a Capricorn. Also, I am coming up on my 2nd Saturn Return, and I certainly hope it will be better than the first one. You would think with all that earth energy in my chart I would be pretty well grounded, but I have my Sun, Moon, Venus, and Ascendant in air signs, and it can be very challenging staying earth bound for me. I am working on this. Thank you, Debra, for your insight.
